Tooth Extraction

Tooth Extraction

Here at Affordable Dentistry of South Florida, our dental team will make every attempt to try and save your tooth. Our dental professionals know that nothing is better than your healthy and natural teeth, however, in some cases you have to resort to tooth extraction.

Dental extractions occur when you’ve got damaged teeth that affect not only your oral, but overall health. Tooth breakage that makes restoration impossible also needs tooth extraction. In other cases, you may have an infection, such as tooth decay. When the infection in a decayed tooth goes bad, you’ll need to pull the tooth out.

Sometimes, teeth need to be removed due to decay, disease, or trauma. When you get a tooth “pulled,” it’s called a tooth extraction.

In some cases, when infection “eats” a lot of the bone, the dentist may recommend to do a bone graft inside the whole where the tooth was. Dental bone grafting can successfully rebuild bone in the areas where it is deficient, ensuring there is enough healthy bone for dental implant treatment.

At the Affordable Dentistry of South Florida office, we are using local anesthesia.  The dental tooth extraction surgery will be a totally painless procedure. However, you may exhibit some discomfort after the anesthesia wears off.

At the end of the dental surgery, the dentist may (or may not) put stitches. It depends on the individual needs of each patient. Most of our stitchers are absorbable. ‌ Absorbable sutures are stitches made from a material that the body can naturally absorb over time. They’re made of materials such as the fibers that line animal intestines or artificially created polymers that easily dissolve into the body. In the last step, the dentist will prescribe you pain relief medicine and antibiotics. The most widely used antibiotic after dental surgery is penicillin. You can get it for free at Publix Pharmacy. If you are allergic to penicillin, the dentist may prescribe you clindamycin.

If you are planning to replace a missing tooth, the best option is to do the  same-day implants. In most cases, same-day dental implants are recommended. You will have a tooth extracted and in the same whole the doctor will place a dental implant. So you will have one dental surgery instead of two surgeries.

Same-day implants (AKA One-Day Implants) can usually be done in a single procedure, ranging from 30 minutes to one hour.

Schedule your appointment today to see if you are a candidate for the one-day dental implant treatment.

Another option to replace a missing tooth is a dental bridge. In this case, if the front tooth was extracted, the dentist can offer you a temporary solution — a dental flipper (for the aesthetic reason only). Feel free to contact our dental office located at 4000 Sheridan St suite b, Hollywood, FL 33021 or simply schedule your dental appointment over the phone (786)808-9988

Top 5 questions about tooth extraction

How painful is a tooth extraction?

Does the procedure hurt? No, despite what you may have imagined, you have nothing to worry about. Having a tooth extracted, whether surgically or not, should not hurt. Usually, you’ll feel a slight pinch as the area is numbed using an anesthetic, afterwards, you will not be able to feel the procedure.

How long does it take to recover from a tooth extraction?

Typically, your oral surgeon will ask that you at least take about 48-72 hours to relax after the treatment, so that the treatment area is allowed to clot. After that, the patient should be able to return to normal physical activity. The soft tissue will usually fully heal in about 3-4 weeks.

What you can not do after tooth extraction?

Avoid rinsing or spitting forcefully for 24 hours after the extraction to avoid dislodging the clot that forms in the socket. After 24 hours, rinse your mouth with a solution made of 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 8 ounces of warm water. Do not drink from a straw for the first 24. Don’t smoke for at least 2 days (48 hours) after tooth extraction. Don’t eat solid foods while your mouth is still numb to avoid choking. Don’t miss your prescriptions, which help you feel comfortable and help reduce swelling. Don’t take aspirin, which is a blood thinner and can prevent clotting and healing.

How can I make my tooth extraction heal faster?

  • Rest. It is crucial to get adequate rest after your tooth extraction
  • Eat a Soft Food Diet
  • Avoid Using a Straw or Smoking
  • Cold Therapy
  • Use Over-the-Counter Medications
  • Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

What happens if you don’t get an implant after tooth extraction?

If a tooth is missing for as little as 12 months with no implant put in its place, a bone loss is likely to occur and the need for other procedures like sinus lift or additional bone graft will be required. Teeth that are surrounding the gap are also likely to shift to try and cover the gap.

1. When might a tooth extraction be necessary, and why is it performed?

Tooth extraction is performed when a tooth is severely damaged, decayed, infected, or impacted (unable to erupt properly). It may also be necessary for orthodontic reasons, to create space for dental prosthetics like dentures, or as part of a treatment plan for gum disease.

2. What can patients expect during a tooth extraction procedure, and does it typically involve pain?

During a tooth extraction, the dentist or oral surgeon will numb the area around the tooth with a local anesthetic to ensure that the patient doesn’t feel pain during the procedure. In some cases, sedation or general anesthesia may be used to keep the patient more comfortable and relaxed. The dentist will then use specialized instruments to gently loosen and remove the tooth from its socket. Patients may feel pressure but should not experience pain.

3. What is the recovery process like after a tooth extraction, and are there any important aftercare instructions?

The recovery process following a tooth extraction varies depending on the complexity of the extraction and the patient’s overall health. Patients can expect some swelling, discomfort, and mild bleeding for a few days. It’s crucial to follow post-operative instructions provided by the dentist, which typically include taking any prescribed pain medications, applying ice to reduce swelling, avoiding certain foods, and maintaining good oral hygiene. Proper aftercare helps promote faster healing and reduces the risk of complications such as infection or dry socket.
